A free and powerful media player
StellarPlayer is a free video player software that allows you to easily play and watch video files. Developed by Coldlake Technology (Wuhan) Co., Ltd., this multimedia program supports various media file formats, HD and 4K video playback, numerous streaming protocols, and even different subtitle formats.
Similar to other video players, StellarPlayer boasts clear and crisp graphics for your files, as well as smooth and low latency playback. It also offers a variety of configurations and even the option to install supported plugins. However, its interface has a smattering of Chinese characters—which you can’t change to English.
Take your pick
The core of a good video player application is its wide scope of support. StellarPlayer falls easily enough into this category with just how many formats it can play. It accepts popular video formats like MP4, AVI, FLV, WMV, MKV, HD, 4K, Blu-ray, and HDR. It can also play audio-only files like MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, among others. Plus, if you prefer streaming videos via website links, this software can handle them as well—offering protocols like HTTP, RTMP, UDP, and FTP.
The playback effect and audio direct output here are clear and smooth, avoiding any drop in the file’s quality thanks to its impressive CPU and GPU tuning technology. Its decoding features multiple graphics cards and AI intelligence to help automatically select the right option for your hardware—such as auto-analysis of HDR videos for lower use of resources when playing them. This program’s high-speed motion compensation algorithm can even improve your videos’ playback to 60 FPS.
Highly user-friendly
Upon launching, you’re greeted with two panes: the left one containing the main buttons you can use for quick playbacks and the right one containing your current playlist. You can hide the right panel with the arrow beside it or customize it using the Playlist Management feature. The four main buttons are Open File, Open Folder, Open URL, and Projection. The last one enables you to screencast—using DLNA projection to either receive feedback from other devices or cast videos to them wirelessly.
Aside from these, you can configure various settings for this video player—such as recordings, screenshots, rendering, hotkeys, and video behavior. You can’t customize the subtitles themselves extensively through this but it does support formats like SRT, ASS, SSA, and SUB. However, while even the program’s theme can be changed, you can’t switch to another language. This is a hassle as the default language is English while some of the labels on the controls are in Chinese—and you can’t fix them with a quick language interface change.
Versatile in its scope
All in all, StellarPlayer is a solid all-around media player for any type of user. While its settings aren’t too in-depth and there are some interface language issues here and there, the program’s performance itself is satisfactory and can be used for either work-related or leisure viewing. This is a highly recommended software for those looking into free and powerful video tools.
